Southampton v Watford preview

naijabet.com

Southampton and Watford will both start life under new managers when they take to the pitch at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Claude Puel will begin his tenure in charge of the Saints, after taking over from Ronald Koeman, while Walter Mazzarri has replaced Quique Sanchez Flores at the Hornets.

Both new bosses will want to get off to the best possible start in 2016/17, but while Watford have managed to keep hold of their stars in Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo over the summer, Southampton have lost yet more of theirs – with Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane both departing the club.

Southampton will be without Ryan Bertrand after the left-back suffered up a knee injury in training following his return from Euro 2016 with England.

Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares are doubts despite rejoining training but Virgil van Dijk has recovered from a knock.

New signings Isaac Success and Brice Dja Djedje will miss out for Watford with foot and leg injuries respectively.

Valon Behrami and Adlene Guedioura are also doubts as they recover from recent injuries, but Craig Cathcart is expected to play despite a back issue.

Opta stats

Southampton are unbeaten in their last five league meetings with Watford (W3 D2 L0).

Only Leicester City (42) have won more Premier League points in 2016 than Southampton (39).

Puel will become the seventh different French manager in Premier League history – just three of the previous six have managed over 20 matches in the competition.

Ighalo has scored just two goals in 18 Premier League appearances in 2016 so far; this after netting 13 goals in 19 PL apps for Watford in 2015.

The top two goalscorers for Southampton in the Premier League last season have both left the club this summer – Pelle and Mané (11 goals each).

This will be the first time two opposing managers have faced each other in their first-ever Premier League games since the opening day of the 2004-05 season (Iain Dowie v Nigel Worthington and Jacques Santini v Rafael Benitez).

The last Southampton manager to win their opening Premier League game in charge was Paul Sturrock back in March 2004 (2-0 vs Liverpool).

The Three Big Outright Market – Leicester City,Tottenham and Arsenal

It is becoming clearer that Chelsea can not defend their Premier League title in 2015-16. The fight on the table is at the pick with three clubs (Leicester City, Tottenham, Arsenal) running for the title. The current leading club is leading with just 2 points as at this time.

outright

The question is, Who will be on top come May? Could Leicester City, Tottenham or Arsenal get into the mix?

Can Leicester do the unthinkable? Will this finally be Arsenal’s year? At this stage last year, 13 points separated the top four, a gap which stands at just four points this season.

On NaijaBet.com, odd on Leicester City to win is 2.00, Tottenham to win is 3.90 and Arsenal to win is 2.37.

Some Insight Into The Present Top Three

Arsenal

Strengths:

Arsenal have the creative brilliance of Mesut Ozil and goals from the attackers of the calibre of Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez. A crucial new factor is the vastly experienced Petr Cech in goal – not just a calming influence and world-class goalkeeper, but also a personality who knows what it takes to win Premier Leagues at Chelsea.

Weaknesses:

Arsenal’s weaknesses are they have too many players in one position and not enough width and balance in their team. Defensively they can be suspect when they haven’t got the ball so they can be vulnerable when they don’t dominate the ball.

Mental fragility. Have not yet provided conclusive evidence that they have conquered this block – and suspicions that flaw remains were raised again by the shocking 4-0 loss at Southampton on Boxing Day. Arsenal also suffer too many injuries.

What manager Arsene Wenger says: “In 2015, if you look back and try to analyse, we have been consistent and overall we had quite a positive year. We have stabilised defensively and improved our record against the strong teams in the Premier League. So it looks like we are on the right trend, the right way.”

On NaijaBet.com, odd on Arsenal to win is 2.37.

Leicester

Strengths:

Goals and brilliance in the shape of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Desire and intensity all over the pitch and an outstanding midfield player in N’Golo Kante. Atmosphere at the King Power Stadium is also a huge driving force.

Weaknesses:

Shallow depth of squad and it would be a devastating blow if either Vardy or Mahrez were to suffer any injury that would sideline them for a lengthy period of time. The size of their squad may also be examined by the intense pressing style employed by manager Claudio Ranieri and epitomised by Vardy, Mahrez and Kante. May run out of steam.

It’s probably a danger for them to think ‘we’ve got a chance’. All of a sudden they are thinking they have something to lose for the first time and it’s changed slightly. It was blasé and now they have something tangible to hold on to. All of a sudden then there’s a little bit of pressure.

What manager Claudio Ranieri says: “Every match is difficult for us. This league is very crazy…nobody wants to win the league. It’s very strange. We’re the basement and the other teams are a villa with a swimming pool. It’s not easy for us but we want to fight with everybody. It’s a miracle what we’re doing. I’d love this to continue but it’s not easy.”

On NaijaBet.com, odd on Leicester City to win is 2.00.

Tottenham

Strengths:

PM: A young, vibrant squad under the guidance of an outstanding young manager in Mauricio Pochettino who now has Spurs playing the intense pressing game he demands. They have a regular source of goals in Harry Kane also a shining star is emerging in Dele Alli.

Weaknesses:

Will the goals still come if Kane gets injured? And will they have the squad and the mental strength to cope if expectations rise further and they actually get close to that first title since 1961? They may – but it is an unknown quantity.

Spurs have been the most consistent in my view. When I saw them they lacked balance and width at home but they are tough to play against. They might just get away with Harry Kane. If he gets injured, can they replace him?

What manager Mauricio Pochettino says: “I think the numbers reflect that the title is always possible. You need to show the strength during the whole season, we start to speak today about the title, but it is still most important to work hard.”

On NaijaBet.com, odd on Tottenham to win is 3.90.

Who will be the top goalscorer in the Premier League this season?

match preview of chelsae vs arsenal

Cesc Fabregas is confident Chelsea can kickstart their Barclays Premier League title defence with victory against his former club Arsenal on Sunday.

Spain midfielder Fabregas and champions Chelsea have suffered back-to-back league defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton, meaning they have taken just four points from five matches this season, equalling the record for the worst start from defending BPL champions.

But Fabregas set up Diego Costa’s goal before scoring the fourth himself in the 4-0 UEFA Champions League win over Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday, and the former Barcelona man is relishing the chance to arrest Chelsea’s dip in domestic form when they meet the Gunners.

“My confidence is always high, that is not a problem, but sometimes things don’t go well for you for many reasons,” he said.

“We didn’t start the season well and when you see Chelsea so far down the table you have to check twice to make sure this is happening. We have a big game again on Saturday so we must not rest.

“We have to win. It is a London derby, we know Arsenal are a quality team, they play top football and it will be tough but we want to win.”

Arsenal, meanwhile, will want to pick up where they left off in the Barclays Premier League after their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb, which also saw Olivier Giroud sent off.

Arsene Wenger made six changes to the starting line-up that comfortably beat Stoke City last week when they faced Zagreb in Croatia, but midfielder Mikel Arteta said squad rotation is not to blame for the defeat.

“We had the chances but we didn’t take them,” he said. “The manager tried to create the best balance for the game but we didn’t make the most of it.”

Chelsea have a number of injury concerns ahead of Saturday, with Jose Mourinho ruling out Willian after he was forced off with a hamstring problem against Maccabi.

Pedro (thigh) and Thibaut Courtois (knee) are also out, while Radamel Falcao (also knee) is a doubt.

Arsenal are still without Jack Wilshere (leg), Tomas Rosicky and Danny Welbeck (both knee), but Theo Walcott will be vying for a starting spot up-front after scoring as a substitute against Zagreb.

Per Mertesacker could also return to action, having begun training again after being sidelined through illness.

Chelsea carry an impressive record heading into Saturday’s match, having won four and drawn three of their last seven league meetings with Arsenal.

But Wenger sealed his first win in 14 attempts over Mourinho in last month’s 1-0 FA Community Shield victory at Wembley Stadium.

Chelsea (from): Begovic, Blackman, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Djilobodji, Ivanovic, Rahman, Terry, Zouma, Fabregas, Hazard, Loftus-Cheek, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Traore, Costa, Falcao, Kenedy, Remy.

Arsenal (from): Cech, Ospina, Bellerin, Chambers, Debuchy, Gabriel, Gibbs, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal, Arteta, Cazorla, Coquelin, Flamini, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ozil, Ramsey, Campbell, Giroud, Sanchez, Walcott.

Hoffenheim – Bayern Munich Preview: Robben demands strong away showing

Image result for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim logo

The Dutch winger wants to make it two wins from two when Pep Guardiola’s men travel to the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena this weekend

Arjen Robben has demanded another dominant performance from Bayern Munich in their Bundesliga clash at Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Bayern, in the hunt for a record fourth consecutive league title, began their Bundesliga campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Hamburg last Friday.

Thomas Muller’s double, combined with goals from Medhi Benatia, Robert Lewandowski and debutant Douglas Costa sealed the rout, but Robben asserted that Hoffenheim will provide a sterner opposition, although they have yet to beat Bayern in 14 attempts.

“We must try to immediately lay down a marker,” said the winger. “[Hoffenheim] are a team that can sit and defend, but they also make good forward pressure.

“Therefore, the goal is to show them immediately that we are in control, and show positive body language and passion.”

Robben, now in his seventh season with the Bavaria giants, scored 19 goals in all competitions in 2014-15, only for his campaign to be cut short by a series of niggling injuries.

But the Dutchman, who went close to netting on several occasions against Hamburg, is now back to full fitness and is aiming to recapture his best form in the coming weeks as Bayern target yet another Bundesliga record.

“I am delighted to attack again this season and to get back on the pitch,” he added.

“All I want to do is simply be an important part of the team once again.

“To win a fourth title would be something special, because you’re part of a story that lasts forever.”

Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol, meanwhile, has had to revamp his squad after a number of high-profile departures in the close-season, including Roberto Firmino’s switch to Liverpool.

One player that has remained at the Rhein-Neckar Arena is Kevin Volland and the forward insisted that Hoffenheim must aim to attack the Bundesliga champions if they are to stand a chance of beating Pep Guardiola’s team.

“We cannot just defend, because then it will only be a matter of time until they score,” he said.

“We have to be courageous, we have to attack and be aggressive.

“Obviously, this is a risky strategy but in my view the only way to have a chance against them.”
