Manchester United
have been charged by the Football Association (FA) over misconduct of
their players in the 2-0 defeat by runaway Premier League leaders
Liverpool.
United’s players surrounded referee Craig Pawson midway through the first-half on Sunday after Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk challenged goalkeeper David de Gea.
Chelsea remain in
pole position to claim fourth spot in the Premier League and a return to
the riches and prestige of the Champions League next season.
However, a slump in form from Frank Lampard’s men has left the door open for Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal to secure a much-needed return to Europe’s top competition, while Wolves and Sheffield United are also aiming to reach the promised land for the first time.
Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero
escaped unhurt after crashing his Lamborghini on his way to training on
Monday, according to reports.
Romero, 32, was seen in images
posted on social media standing next to the car which was wedged
underneath a roadside crash barrier close to United’s Carrington
training ground.
The Manchester Evening News cited a club source as saying Romero was involved in the crash but did not suffer any injuries.
Sky Sports reported the Argentina international was even able to take a normal part in training on Monday.
Romero signed for United in 2015, but has made just 53 appearances as he has largely been second choice behind David de Gea.
Frank Lampard lost Reece James to
injury in the 1-0 loss at Newcastle and while the issue isn’t as bad as
initially feared, he may not be risked here with Emerson in line to
feature.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Marco van Ginkel are confirmed as out for the Blues.
Lampard
could make a couple of further changes to his XI with Kurt Zouma and
Mateo Kovacic among those who may come in, while Ross Barkley and Pedro
are pushing for starts.
Rashford vows to return ‘fitter than ever’ after back injury
Marcus Rashford has vowed to return for Manchester United “fitter than ever” as he recovers from a stress fracture of the back.
The 22-year-old striker faces at least six weeks on the sidelines, with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming the full extent of the injury after Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool.
Liverpool still not interested in title talk – Robertson
Andy Robertson says Liverpool will not think about winning the Premier League title until it is mathematically certain, saying the players remain determined to stick to their game-by-game mentality.
Liverpool spent much of the last 30 years living in Manchester United’s shadow, but after three decades their time to be crowned champions of England again is nigh.
A 2-0 win over United at Anfield put the European champions 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League and 30 points
Both Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte are nearing a return to full fitness and should be back in action early next month, with the treatment room now vacant.
Following the 6-1 annihilation of Aston Villa last weekend Pep Guardiola must be tempted to field both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus from the start once more.
However, both Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva will be itching to return, so one or the other will likely lose their place, along with David Silva from the midfield.
Crystal Palace
Without as many as nine first team players, Roy Hodgson has been working wonders with this Palace squad and has little choice but to field a very similar lineup to that which earned a point against Arsenal last weekend.
Max Meyer was forced off through injury, however, following a poor tackle by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the German is unlikely to recover for the trip to the Etihad.
We could see a first start for loan signing Cenk Tosun in turn, with Jordan Ayew forced into a wide role on the right.
Prediction
Pep Guardiola is enjoying a decent spell with regards to injuries of late and with both Laporte and Sane soon to return, the Spaniard will be confident of a strong end to the season.
By comparison, Palace are down to the bare bones and it will take an almighty effort to earn what would be back-to-back victories at the Etihad.
The visitors will defend manfully, that’s for sure, so City won’t have it as easy as last weekend but if they play anywhere near the level they did in the first half at Villa Park the hosts should win comfortably.
