United are desperate to avoid another situation similar to Alexis Sanchez where they pay huge wages to an ageing player on the decline.

However, Marcus Rashford’s long-term back injury has left United desperate to get a striker through the door in the last week of the transfer window.

At this stage it remains unlikely United will step up their interest for Cavani due to the financials required for someone that turns 33 next month.
